👋 Getting Started

What is SpectateMe?
SpectateMe is a race-day companion app for runners and their supporters. The runner shares their live GPS position during a race, and supporters share their live location automatically — no pinning required, it updates as they move. As the runner approaches a supporter, they get an alert through their headphones or smartwatch — so they know exactly where to look for a familiar face.

SpectateMe is built for one thing: race day — helping a runner and their supporters spot each other in the crowd. It is not a safety device, personal tracker, or training companion, and is not recommended or supported for any other use.

Do I need to create an account?
SpectateMe uses Google Sign-In, so you sign in with your existing Google account — no separate username or password to remember. If you have a Gmail or Google account (most Android phones do), you're ready to go.
What devices does SpectateMe work on?
SpectateMe is currently available for Android phones. A Wear OS companion app is included for runners who want proximity alerts on their smartwatch (Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 or later, or any Wear OS 3+ watch). Garmin watch support is coming soon. iOS support is planned for the future.
Is SpectateMe free?

It depends on your role:

  • Spectators are always free. Joining a runner's session and seeing their position on the map costs nothing. Your own location is shared automatically from your phone's GPS.
  • Runners need a subscription to broadcast their location during a race. There's a 30-day free trial, after which it's a small annual fee (see Pricing & Billing).

⚠️ Intended Use & Safety

SpectateMe has one purpose: helping a runner and their supporters find each other on the course. It is not a safety device and is not recommended or supported for training runs, solo activity, or any other purpose.
Can I use SpectateMe for training runs or solo runs?

No. SpectateMe is built for one thing: helping a runner and their supporters find each other on the course during a race. It is not designed, tested, or supported for training runs, solo activity, or general location sharing, and we do not recommend using it for those purposes.

If you need a way for others to follow your location during training runs, use a dedicated app designed for that purpose — such as a running app with live-tracking features, or a personal safety app that includes emergency alerting.

Is SpectateMe a personal safety device?

No. SpectateMe is not a safety device and must not be treated as one. It depends on GPS signal, mobile data coverage, and battery life — none of which are guaranteed during a race. Alerts can be delayed, inaccurate, or missed entirely.

If you have safety requirements — for a race or any other activity — choose equipment suited to the purpose: a dedicated personal safety app, an emergency beacon, or a GPS device with reliable SOS functionality. Do not rely on SpectateMe to confirm someone's welfare or to raise an alert in an emergency.

Do I use SpectateMe at my own risk?
Yes. SpectateMe is a best-effort convenience tool. Proximity alerts, location updates, and connectivity may all be affected by real-world conditions at a race event. You use the app entirely at your own risk — see our Terms of Service for the full detail.
What should I use instead if I need safety features?

For personal safety during runs, consider apps or devices specifically designed for that purpose. Examples of categories (not endorsements) include:

  • Personal safety apps with live location sharing, check-in timers, and emergency alerting (e.g. apps that notify a contact if you don't check in)
  • GPS running watches with incident detection and emergency SOS features
  • Dedicated emergency beacons for remote or rural routes

Always choose a solution that matches the environment and distance you're covering, and make sure someone knows your route and expected return time.

🏃 For Runners

How do I share my location with supporters?
Open SpectateMe, tap Start Session, and share the session link or code with your supporters before the race starts. They join via the SpectateMe app on their phone. Once the session is live, your GPS position updates automatically throughout the race.
How does the proximity alert work?
When you approach within a set distance of a supporter's live location, SpectateMe plays an audio alert through your headphones and (if you have a connected smartwatch) buzzes your wrist. The alert tells you their name and how far away they are — so you know to look up and wave!
Will SpectateMe drain my battery?
SpectateMe is designed with battery efficiency in mind. Location updates are sent at a frequency that balances accuracy with battery use, and the update rate only increases when supporters are nearby. For a typical marathon (4–5 hours), battery impact should be modest alongside your normal race-day apps. We recommend starting with a full charge and, if you have a long race, a portable power bank as backup.
Do my supporters need the app too?
Yes — supporters need SpectateMe installed on their Android phone. They join your session using the link or code you share with them. Spectator access is free, so there's no barrier for them to download and join.
How many supporters can join my session?
Up to 5 spectators can join a single session. This limit is in place to keep the service fair and stable for all users. You'll receive a separate proximity alert for each supporter as you approach them on the course.
Can I control who joins my session?

Yes. When you create a session you can turn on "Require spectator approval". With this on, anyone who taps your session link is placed in a waiting queue rather than joining immediately. You'll see their name and a prompt to Approve or Reject them on your pre-race waiting screen. You can approve or reject as many people as you like before you start.

When you tap Start, you choose what happens to anyone still waiting: either auto-approve them all (they join the moment the session starts) or auto-reject them (they're told the session has begun without them). Once the session is running, no new spectators can be approved — so it's worth handling all pending requests before you set off.

Approval mode is entirely optional. If you turn it off (the default), anyone with your link joins immediately — which is simpler for trusted groups like family and friends.
Can I stop new people joining mid-session?

Yes. From both the pre-race waiting screen and the active tracking screen, you can control who can request to join:

  • Lock link (reversible): Temporarily blocks new join requests. Anyone who already joined is unaffected. You can unlock at any time.
  • Permanently close link (irreversible): Closes the link for good — no new spectators can join even if the link is shared again. This cannot be undone.

These controls apply to new join requests only. Anyone already tracking you continues to do so uninterrupted.

👀 For Spectators

How do I join a runner's session?
Ask your runner for their SpectateMe session link or code before the race. Open the app, tap Join Session, enter the code or tap the link, and you're in. You'll see the runner's position update on the map in real time.
How does SpectateMe know where I am?
It uses your phone's GPS automatically — there's nothing to set up. As soon as you join a session, your live location is shared with the runner and updates as you move. This means you can follow the race to multiple viewing spots and the runner's alert will fire correctly each time you're nearby.
Will I know when the runner is close to me?
Yes — you'll see the runner's position approaching on the map in real time. The runner is the one who receives the audio/watch alert, so that they can look out for you as they pass.
Can other spectators see where I'm standing?
No. Your location is only visible to the runner — never to other spectators in the session. If a runner has several supporters spread across the course, each supporter's position is completely private from one another. Only the runner sees where everyone is.
Do I need a subscription as a spectator?
No. Spectating is completely free — no subscription, no payment, no catch. Just download the app, sign in with Google, and join your runner's session.
I joined using the session link but nothing happened — where is the runner?

If the runner has turned on spectator approval, you'll land on a waiting screen rather than going straight to the map. Your runner will receive a notification with your name and needs to tap Approve before you can see their location. This usually only takes a moment if they're watching their phone before the race.

Join before the race starts. Once the runner taps Start, the approval window closes. If you haven't been approved by then, you won't be able to join — so make sure you're in the queue well before the start gun.
What if my join request is rejected?
If the runner declines your request, you'll be notified in the app. You have up to three attempts to request access to any given session. After three rejections you will no longer be able to join that session. If you think the rejection was a mistake, ask your runner to check their pending approvals.

💳 Pricing & Billing

How much does the runner subscription cost?
Runner access is billed annually. The current price is shown in the app and on the Google Play Store listing. The subscription covers unlimited sessions throughout the year.
Is there a free trial?
Yes — new runner accounts get a 30-day free trial with full access. No payment is taken during the trial. If you don't subscribe after the trial ends, you'll revert to spectator access (you can still join others' sessions for free). One trial per person.
How do I cancel my subscription?
SpectateMe subscriptions are managed through Google Play. To cancel: open the Google Play Store app → tap your profile → Payments & subscriptionsSubscriptions → SpectateMe → Cancel subscription. You'll retain runner access until the end of your current billing period.
How do I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by Google Play and are subject to Google's refund policy. For purchases within the last 48 hours, you can request a refund directly in the Play Store. For older purchases, contact Google Play support. We're unable to issue refunds directly.

📡 Signal & Accuracy

Does SpectateMe work without mobile signal?

SpectateMe requires a mobile data connection to send and receive location updates. GPS itself works without signal (your phone still knows where it is), but sharing that position with supporters requires data.

Race courses in city centres and parks often have good coverage, but remote or rural routes may have gaps. SpectateMe will continue running and will sync when signal is restored, but alerts may be delayed in low-coverage areas.
How accurate is the location?
SpectateMe uses your phone's GPS, which is typically accurate to within 5–10 metres in open conditions. Accuracy can be reduced in areas with tall buildings, dense tree cover, or underground sections. The proximity alert threshold is set generously enough to account for typical GPS variation.
What happens if the app loses connection during a race?
If you lose data connection, SpectateMe will keep running in the background and attempt to reconnect automatically. Location updates will resume when signal is restored. Supporters will see the runner's last known position on the map during any gap. The app is designed to recover gracefully from brief signal interruptions common at busy race events.

Smartwatch Support

Which smartwatches does SpectateMe support?
  • Wear OS watches (Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 or later, Pixel Watch, and other Wear OS 3+ devices) — full native app with proximity alerts and a live session screen.
  • Garmin watches — native Connect IQ app coming soon. In the meantime, Garmin watches that support notification mirroring will display proximity alerts from your phone.
  • Other watches (Polar, Suunto, COROS, Amazfit, etc.) — any watch that mirrors Android notifications will display the proximity alert automatically. No extra setup required.
Do I need to install anything on my watch?
For Wear OS watches, the SpectateMe watch app is included with the phone app and installs automatically when your watch is paired. For other watches, notification mirroring works out of the box — no separate install needed.
My watch isn't buzzing when I get close to a supporter
Check that your watch is connected to your phone via Bluetooth during the race. For Wear OS watches, make sure the SpectateMe watch app is installed (check in the Play Store's "Manage apps & device" section on your watch). For other watches, check that notification mirroring is enabled in your watch's companion app.

🔧 Troubleshooting

The runner's location isn't updating on my screen
  • Check both devices have an active data connection.
  • Make sure the runner has started their session and location sharing is active (the session screen should show a pulsing indicator).
  • Try closing and reopening the app on the spectator's device.
  • In busy race conditions, the server can experience higher load — a short delay in updates is normal and location will catch up quickly.
I didn't get the proximity alert when my runner passed
  • Make sure your location is pinned in the app before the runner reaches your section of the course.
  • Check your phone's volume and that SpectateMe has notification permissions (Settings → Apps → SpectateMe → Notifications).
  • If using headphones, ensure they're connected before the runner approaches.
  • Proximity alerts depend on mobile data — if either device had a signal drop at the key moment, the alert may not have fired in time.
SpectateMe is a best-effort convenience tool. Signal gaps and GPS variation at busy race events can occasionally cause missed alerts. Always keep an eye on the map as a backup.
The app is using too much battery
Ensure background location permission is set to "Allow all the time" in Android settings — this paradoxically uses less battery than "Allow only while using the app" because it avoids repeated app restarts. Also, closing other background apps before your race can help.

🔒 Your Data & Privacy

What data does SpectateMe collect?
SpectateMe collects the minimum needed to work: your precise GPS location (during an active session only), your name and email address (from Google Sign-In), and your Google account ID. See the full Privacy Policy for details.
Is my location stored anywhere?
No. Your GPS position is relayed in real time to the other participants in your session and is never written to a database. Once your session ends, your location history does not exist anywhere in our systems.
Who can see my location?
Only the other participants in your active session — the people you've explicitly invited using your session link or code. Your location is not visible to anyone outside your session, and it's not visible to SpectateMe staff during normal operation.
Are my details written to server logs?

Yes, in a limited way. Our servers write operational logs to AWS CloudWatch Logs (London region, encrypted at rest) for the purpose of diagnosing errors and debugging issues. These logs may contain:

  • Your internal account ID (an opaque identifier, not your name or email)
  • Your display name (e.g. when you join or are approved for a session)
  • Session IDs and timestamps
  • Subscription status events (e.g. subscription verified, trial started)
  • Auth failure reasons (e.g. "token expired") — but never the token itself

Logs do not contain your GPS location, email address, full Google ID, or payment details. All log entries are automatically and permanently deleted after 14 days.

Does SpectateMe share my data with advertisers?
No. SpectateMe does not sell, rent, or share your personal data with advertisers or any third parties for marketing purposes. The app contains no advertising. See our Privacy Policy for a full account of how data is handled.

🗑️ Deleting Your Account

To request deletion of your account and all associated personal data, email hello@spectateme.co.uk with the subject line "Delete my account". We will process your request within 30 days.
What gets deleted when I delete my account?

When your deletion request is processed, we will permanently delete:

  • Your name and email address
  • Your Google account ID
  • Your subscription or entitlement record
  • Any open sessions associated with your account
  • Any session records linked to you (these would normally be automatically deleted 5 days after the session ends, but are purged immediately on a deletion request)
Is anything kept after I delete my account?

Two categories of data are retained after deletion:

1. A pseudonymised identifier and, if applicable, a purchase token (up to 14 months)
To prevent abuse of our free trial offer, we retain a one-way cryptographic hash (SHA-256) of your Google ID for up to 14 months after account deletion. This hash is a mathematical fingerprint — it cannot be reversed to identify you, and it contains no personal information such as your name or email. It is used solely to detect if someone attempts to create a new account to obtain another free trial.

If you had an active or past Google Play subscription, we also retain your Google Play purchase token alongside the hash. This is used solely to restore your subscription if you re-subscribe within the retention period. It is not shared with any third party beyond Google Play's own systems. Both the hash and the purchase token are automatically and permanently deleted after 14 months.

2. Anonymised aggregate data (indefinitely)
We may retain anonymised, non-identifiable statistics (such as total session counts or geographic heat maps of race participation) that cannot be linked back to any individual. This data is not personal data under UK GDPR.

If you delete your account and create a new one, the free trial will not be available on the new account. Your subscription history will also not carry over.
How long does deletion take?
We aim to process all deletion requests within 30 days of receipt. You will receive an email confirmation when your account has been deleted. If you don't hear back within 30 days, please follow up at hello@spectateme.co.uk.
Can I get my data before deleting my account?
Yes. Under UK GDPR you have the right to receive a copy of your personal data in a portable format before requesting deletion. Email hello@spectateme.co.uk with the subject line "Data export request" and we will provide a summary of the personal data we hold about you.
What if I just want to stop using SpectateMe without deleting my account?
You can simply stop using the app. If you have a runner subscription, cancel it via Google Play to avoid future charges (see Pricing & Billing). Your account and data will remain on our systems but will not be used unless you start a new session. You can request full deletion at any time.
How do I exercise my other privacy rights?
Under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 you have the right to access, correct, restrict, or object to processing of your data. Email hello@spectateme.co.uk with details of your request. Full details of your rights are in our Privacy Policy. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you may complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
